The Massachusetts Department of Criminal Justice Information Services (DCJIS) recently issued amended regulations for the Commonwealth’s Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) law. These regulatory changes primarily impact iCORI users—i.e., those employers that obtain criminal records provided by the DCJIS itself. The new regulations appear to have minimal impact on employers that order background checks sourced directly from court records, which remain excluded from CORI. Below we summarize the changes to the regulations. Employers currently accessing CORI, or those intending to utilize the iCORI system, should review and update their policies to ensure compliance with the amended regulations.

SPECIAL ATTENTION
On May 23, 2017, the Department of Criminal Justice Information Services will be changing its online payment processing vendor. When this change goes into effect, users of the iCORI system who are not fee waived will be required to pay a convenience fee to the vendor equal to 2.35% of the total amount of each transaction. This service fee will be in addition to the regular CORI request fee of $25 or $50.
